“The stress on individual liberty allows drivers to feel they can drive as they please without formal training or fear of punishment. Anonymous behind the wheel, they do not show their usual concern for getting along with others. Fatalism and machismo appear to condition the behavior of male drivers, who take all kinds of chances, and of male pedestrians, who make a game out of dodging cars by a hair’s breath.”
